This is an excellent example to help us appreciate the importance of a service that is often underestimated. One very common misconception is that interpretation (and renting interpretation equipment for simultaneous interpretation) is a "secondary" part of organising events.
English, which is the dominant, if not the official language of nearly all international events, is adequately understood by 50% of participants, with peaks of 80% or 90% in highly technical and scientific topics. These figures might be cited as proof that interpretation services in the English language are useless.
If the above were true, what would the remaining 50% understand? The answer is: “Very little, if anything at all.” What's more, are we sure that participants to scientific or technological events, where a complex language is used, are truly capable of fully and effortlessly grasping all the concepts that are dealt with? The answer is: “No, we are not.”
