About CAT toolsCAT (Computer Aided Translation) tools are extremely sophisticated applications that help the translators with their difficult task by allowing them to focus only on the actual text to be translated. Their most important feature consists of the special filters they use to extract text from the original document, allowing the translator to focus solely on the business of translation and not worry about formatting, images, tables, numbers, indexes, or footnotes. These applications allow customers to provide documents in the final format in which they will be used, which may be a simple Word file, a complicated QuarkXPress or Pagemaker file, a full website in HTML with Javascript, and so forth (note, however, that CAT tools cannot process PDF files, which must be treated as if they were paper documents). Through the use of CAT tools, the translation may be inserted into the file, ready for use, without modifying the tags, i.e. the formatting information. CAT tools of course offer a wide range of advantages throughout the translation process, from the generation of Translation Memories to the creation of glossaries. TMs are fundamental to ensuring the uniformity of similar projects as well as providing considerable cost savings. In fact, they recognise text that has already been translated in other documents and apply the previous translation to the current document, which has three advantages: the translator does not have to translate the previously translated sections, style uniformity is ensured across multiple texts, and customers benefit from lower rates. The final stage of the translation process involves checking the text for grammar and vocabulary errors using our own tools that are so precise that they can even detect a single word missing in a translated paragraph. At the end of this process, when everything has been checked and re-checked several times, the file is exported to its original format with a mere click of the mouse. |
